14025 – Fire Safety Engineer (remote) – Juno Beach, FL

Type: Temporary Project
Estimated Duration: 12 months with possible extensions
Work Setting: Remote with travel to local jurisdictions for community meetings and stakeholder education.
Required:
• Serve as a Subject Matter Expert (SME) in fire safety specifically for utility-scale battery energy storage systems (BESS).
• Expert knowledge of UL, NFPA (National Fire Protection Association), and IFC (International Fire Code) standards.
• Experience reviewing UL 9540a reports across cell, module, unit, and installation levels.
• Overseeing complex safety reports, including Hazard Mitigation Analysis (HMA), Failure Mode and Effects Analysis (FMEA), heat flux analysis, and Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) simulations.
• Ability to present technical safety data to First Responders, Fire Marshals, Authorities Having Jurisdiction (AHJs), and Public Utility Commissions (PUCs).
• Experience educating firefighters on BESS hazards, mitigation strategies, and Emergency Response/Operation Plans (ERP/EOPs).
Preferred:
• Experience creating standard outlines and templates for third-party analysis to streamline supplier onboarding.
• Advanced degree in Fire Protection Engineering or a related technical discipline.
Responsibilities:
• Analyze, approve, and provide guidance on fire safety system designs for both BESS manufacturers and specific projects.
• Review project- and product-level designs to ensure strict adherence to all applicable safety codes and standards.
• Initiate and foster critical relationships with national, state, and local fire institutions and first responders.
• Represent the organization at community meetings to address and educate stakeholders on BESS fire safety concerns.
• Work closely with first responders to develop and refine sequences of operation and emergency response plans.
• Standardize BESS fire safety information across the organization to ensure consistent messaging across all deployment regions.
• Templatize third-party reporting to increase the efficiency and effectiveness of new supplier evaluations.
